World Mental Health Day 2024

08 October 2024

Mental health is an integral part of health and well-being. Mental health conditions are increasing worldwide and remain one of the most neglected areas of public health.

World Mental Health Day is held on 10 October each year. The theme for World Mental Health Day 2024 is "It is time to prioritise mental health in the workplace". It aims to highlight various aspects of mental health at work, from workplace conditions and stress management to the importance of social inclusion and empowerment. The overall goal is to champion mental health in the workplace and build best practices that create cultures where workers have the potential to contribute productively and thrive. According to the World Health Organization:

  • employed adults spend more time in the workplace than any other activity during waking hours
  • mental health issues in the workplace, such as depression and anxiety, impact productivity, attendance, and overall performance
  • untreated mental health conditions in the workplace costs the global economy approximately US$1 trillion each year

Campaign materials for 2024 World Mental Health Day are available from the World Health Organization website and the World Federation for Mental Health website.

Advice for Travellers

International travel represents an exciting but potentially stressful experience. Mental Health problems are common, and all travel health professionals and travellers should be alert to the potential disruption to stable mental health that can occur during travel.

  • Reminding travellers of simple strategies during travel preparation and the trip itself can reduce the risk of mental ill health associated with travel.
