Dengue Fever in Pakistan (Update)

The dengue fever outbreak in Punjab province is ongoing with a total number of 21 115 cases, as of 17 November 2011. Of those cases, 17 360 are reported from Lahore in the east of the country close to the border with India. Around 234 individuals are being treated for dengue fever in hospitals around the Punjab, of those, 189 are being treated in Lahore.

New dengue fever cases continue to be reported from Karachi, Sindh province in the far south of Pakistan also.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
