Cholera in Dominican Republic (Update)

25 November 2011

The cholera outbreak in Dominican Republic that began in November 2010, is not yet over; new cholera cases remain at a level higher than normal. In September 2011, the worst affected areas were the provinces of San Juan, Santo Domingo and the National District. The health authorities are taking steps to prevent further cases.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is still considered a low risk for travellers who have access to safe drinking water and who maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and food safety.

Cholera vaccine is available for those mixing closely with the local population who cannot ensure safe water/food and a good standard of personal hygiene.
