Cholera in Democratic Republic of Congo (Update)

28 February 2012

The cholera outbreak in Congo (DRC) is ongoing and continues to spread, now affecting 9 out of 11 provinces of the country. The United Nations is concerned by the outbreak as 26 000 cases and 644 resulting deaths have been recorded since January last year (2011). Cholera is an ongoing problem for the country due to the lack of access to safe, potable water.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
