Health officials have issued a warning as an outbreak of pertussis continues to affect parts of British Columbia, western Canada. More than 140 suspected or confirmed cases have been recorded since early December 2011.
The worst affected areas include Hope, Chilliwack and Agassiz, although officials report that the outbreak has also spread to other areas. It is felt that the true number of cases is likely to be considerably higher. The Chief Medical Officer is advising immunisation for those not fully protected.
Advice for Travellers
Parents should ensure that children have received their routine immunisations against pertussis as per UK national immunisation schedule. Immunisation against pertussis is not recommended for children over the age of 10 or adults in the UK (Green Book) but in many countries, including Australia, US and Canada, a booster dose in adolescence is part of the national vaccination schedule.
