Dengue Fever in Brazil

The Secretariat of Health has reported 18 779 cases of dengue fever in the state of Rio de Janeiro since the beginning of 2012. Of these cases, 11 913 occurred in the state capital, the city of Rio de Janeiro. The capital city accounts for 63.4% of cases for the entire state with around 170 new cases being identified daily at present.

Advice for Travellers

The city of Rio de Janeiro is a popular tourist destination and travellers should be made aware of the risk of dengue fever. As there is no vaccine available against dengue fever, bite avoidance measures are paramount.
