Cholera in Haiti (Update)

05 April 2012

Haiti is experiencing an increase in cholera cases since the onset of the rainy season in early March 2012. The new cases have been identified in the western and northern part of the country and health officials have recorded as many as 77 new cases per day.

The new cases come after a steady decline since June 2011. This cholera outbreak is now the largest worldwide with 530 000 cases and 7000 deaths.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
