Cholera in Sierra Leone

21 June 2012

A cholera outbreak has been reported in Yealie Boyah, Kambia town in Kambia district, Northern Province of Sierra Leone.

The media report states that more than 15 individuals have died in the last three days and the outbreak is due to a lack of sanitation and access to safe drinking water. Confirmation and further information is awaited.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
