Dengue Fever in Ecuador (Update)

The Ministry of Health has reported more than 12 000 cases of dengue fever in Ecuador in 2012. Of the reported cases, 178 are of the more serious form, dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF); there have also been 20 deaths from the infection. During the same time period of 2011, 3700 dengue fever cases were reported with 59 cases of DHF and 4 deaths.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
