Dengue Fever in Cambodia (Update)

Health officials are predicting that the dengue fever season in Cambodia this year (2012) will be prolonged. Normally at this time, cases begin to decline however, ongoing heavy rains have lengthened the season.

During the first six months of the year, 15 597 cases of dengue fever and 60 associated deaths have been reported; this compares with 4604 cases for the same time period in 2011. Officials estimate that this is around 80% of the actual number of cases.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
