Cholera in Sierra Leone (Update)

01 August 2012

The cholera outbreak in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone is not yet under control with more than 1500 cases and 17 deaths reported to date. Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is working with the Ministry of Health to contain the outbreak and plan to open a further 2 cholera treatment units in the city within the next 10 days, making a total of 5. Five hundred patients have been treated in the units so far but new cases are increasing.

MSF is working with the Ministry of Health to disseminate health promotion messages about how people can protect themselves and others against the spread of disease. Information about how and where to seek help if needed is also being communicated.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
