The media has reported on a resurgence of cholera in Cuba less than one month since the outbreak that began in July 2012, was declared over by the Health Ministry.
There are unconfirmed reports of new suspected cases occurring in two small towns. Twenty seven cases have been reported in the municipality of San Luis, in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba. Nineteen suspected cases have also been reported in the Bahia Honda municipality, Artemisa province, 35 miles west of Havana.
Advice for Travellers
Cholera risk outwith the outbreak area is negligible for travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas should discuss their risk with a healthcare professional who can advise on the possible use of the vaccine. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population, and cannot ensure safe drinking water, can be immunised against cholera.
All travellers should practise strict food and water hygiene and wash their hands frequently, especially before eating.
