The outbreak of mumps in Egypt is continuing and cases are now being reported nationwide. The media reported on 8 October 2012, a total of 583 mumps cases from several governorates of the country. The worst affected area is Giza with 240 cases followed by Minya (95 cases), Beni Suef (48 cases), Fayoum (38 cases) and Cairo with 12 mumps cases.
In the previous report on the mumps outbreak in Qena governorate (more than 100 cases) a shortage of MMR vaccine was highlighted. The Health Ministry has projected a rise in mumps cases this winter in Egypt.
Advice for Travellers
Egypt is a popular destination for UK travellers in the winter months and they should be made aware of the outbreak.
It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
