Rabies (Animal) in Greece

On 19 October 2012, the Animal Health Directorate of Greece reported to the World Organisation for Amimal Health a case of rabies virus infection in a red fox. The fox which was behaving abnormally was killed and subsequent laboratory testing confirmed rabies virus infection. No human exposure was reported.

It has been 25 years since rabies was reported in terrestrial animals in Greece. This case was identified in the region of Macedonia in northern Greece which borders Albania and the Republic of Macedonia; two countries with a high risk of rabies.

Investigation and monitoring of this event is ongoing.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers should be aware that northern Greece borders two countries with a high risk of rabies. Any animal bite should be reported as soon as possible for assessment. Travellers should not approach wild animals that appear to be behaving strangely.
