Marburg Haemorrhagic Fever in Uganda (Update)

The media has reported on the outbreak of Marburg haemorrhagic fever in Kabale district in the south west of Uganda.

A total of 14 probable and confirmed cases have been recorded in Kabale district with 2 more deaths making a total of 7. Follow up of 198 close contacts of cases is ongoing.

A new case has been reported from Ibanda district in the west of the country. The case was a 32-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted to hospital on 19 October 2012, and died 5 days later. Seven close contacts of the woman are being followed up as her blood samples tested positive for Marburg virus.

Advice for Travellers

Marburg is one of a number of viral haemorrhagic diseases occurring in Africa. The risk is low for most travellers unless living in very poor conditions. Transmission is not fully understood, however, bats may play a role. There is a risk of disease transmission in the healthcare setting or close contact with an infected person through direct contact with infected blood, secretions, semen or organs.
