Typhoid Fever in Zimbabwe

An outbreak of typhoid fever been reported in Dzivaresekwa, a high density suburb of Harare, about 10km from the capital city. The outbreak has affected mainly schoolchildren and 15-16 individuals have been admitted to hospital daily since last week.

Harare city council authorities have been blamed for the outbreak due to council’s failure to provide clean water supplies to residents.

Typhoid vaccine is usually recommended for those visiting this area. Precautions with food and water hygiene is also recommended as the vaccine is not fully effective in protecting against typhoid fever.
