Mumps in Spain

06 December 2012

An outbreak of mumps has been reported from the Asturias region in the far north of Spain. In recent weeks, a total of 150 cases have been recorded; most of the cases are male, aged between 15 and 34 years.

The worst affected area is Langreo where cases were first identified, however cases are now being reported from Gijon, Oviedo and Aviles.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
