Dengue Fever in Madeira (Portugal) (Update)

As of 16 December 2012, a total of 2103 cases of dengue fever have been reported from Madeira. Between 10 and 16 December, 53 new cases were reported, representing a 7% decrease on the previous week.

As of 20 December, 72 cases of dengue have been reported among European travellers returning from Madeira since the start of the outbreak.

Advice for Travellers

The recent cases of dengue fever in returning UK travellers highlights the importance that travellers protect themselves from mosquito bites by taking the necessary precautions.

In light of dengue fever in returning travellers, ECDC re-enforces the advice that those who have visited Madeira and experience febrile symptoms with severe headache, retro-orbital pain, myalgia, arthralgia and maculo-papular rash within 14 days of their trip seek medical advice.
