The Health Ministry declared on 16 January 2013, an end to the Ebola outbreak that was reported in Luweero district in November 2012.
The announcement follows completion of the mandatory 42 days of the post- Ebola surveillance countdown period, which is a prerequisite of the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Ebola outbreak was declared on 14 Nov 2012 in the central Uganda district after receipt of confirmation from the Uganda Virus Research Institute that 2 people from the same family in Kakuute village in Nyimba sub-county had died of Ebola. A total 7 cases were reported, almost 90% of whom were relatives living in the same sub-county as the index case.
Advice for Travellers
Although this outbreak has been declared over, travellers should be aware that haemorrhagic fevers remain a risk in Uganda.
