The media has reported on the resurgence of cholera in the eastern province of Holguin. At present, more than 100 adults and 50 children are suspected to be suffering from cholera in various areas of the province. Two women died from cholera after attending a party where several individuals became unwell with a diarrhoeal illness and required admission to hospital.
Last week the authorities in Granma province (also in the east) reported a resurgence of cholera in the capital of Baymo. Granma province is the area where the original outbreak began in June 2012. Cholera cases are also being reported from the eastern province of Guantanamo.
Advice for Travellers
Cholera is a low risk for the average traveller to Cuba, however a good standard of food and water safety and personal hygiene should be maintained.
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera.
