New cases of dengue fever continue to be reported from Cairns in North Queensland. Since the beginning of the year (2013) 55 cases have been confirmed in the city with most being reported in the Whitfield and Edge Hill areas.
The health authorities are taking steps to contain the outbreak by spraying properties with insecticide and reducing mosquito breeding sites around homes in the affected areas. Travellers are also being advised to avoid mosquito bites abroad in order to reduce the importation of dengue fever to North Queensland where the mosquito vector is present.
