World Malaria Day 2013

24 April 2013

World Malaria Day will take place on Thursday 25 April 2013, offering a chance to reflect on the successes so far as well as the remaining challenges in the global fight against malaria.

Malaria remains one of the biggest killers worldwide, causing around 700,000 deaths each year. Most of these are in Africa, where one child dies of malaria every minute. In 2010, there were around 220 million cases of malaria around the world. In the UK, around 1500 imported cases of malaria are reported each year.

The return of malaria to Greece within the last two years highlights the need for ongoing vigilance as well as the need for health professionals to consult up to date resources such as TRAVAX when advising travellers on malaria risk and prevention.

The malaria maps and country specific chemoprophylaxis advice reproduced on TRAVAX are the result of many hours of detailed work and investigation by the Travel and International Health team at Health Protection Scotland.
