A new outbreak of cholera has been reported by the Public Health Ministry. The outbreak which was first identified on 6 January 2013, is taking place in the capital of Havana. As of 15 January, 51 confirmed cases have been recorded.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has highlighted the outbreak on the Cuba Travel Advice page of the website. They are strongly advising UK nationals to monitor local reporting, take sensible precautions regarding water, food and personal hygiene and seek immediate medical attention if suffering from diarrhoea.
Cholera risk outwith the outbreak area is negligible for travellers. All travellers should continue to practise strict food and water hygiene and wash their hands frequently, especially before eating.
