More than 10 929 cases of measles have been reported in Punjab province during the last 5 months with the addition of 141 new cases including 52 from city hospitals, during the last 24 hours (6-7 May 2013).
According to the health department, at least 64 deaths have been reported; most deaths occurring in Lahore, Gujranwala, Rajanpur, Rahim Yar Khan, and Kasur.
Advice for Travellers
It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
