Revised Malaria Guidelines for Travellers from the Advisory Committee on Malaria Prevention (ACMP)

23 August 2013

The Public Health England Advisory Committee on Malaria Prevention (ACMP) has published updated guidelines on malaria prevention in travellers. These guidelines are for use by healthcare professionals who advise travellers. Both Health Protection Scotland (HPS) and NaTHNaC have representation on the ACMP committee.

GENERAL SECTION CHANGES

There are a number of key changes in the revised guidelines, including in the sections below. These changes have been adopted and incorporated into TRAVAX pages:

  • Anticoagulants
  • Breastfeeding
  • Chemoprophylaxis
  • Children
  • Emergency Standby Treatment
  • Frequently asked questions
  • HIV and AIDS
  • Last minute traveller
  • Liver Disease
  • Pregnancy
  • Renal Impairment
  • Sickle cell disease and thalassemia
  • Students and children at boarding schools

HPS, through the Scottish Malaria Advisory Group, produce country recommendations and accompanying maps which are updated on a continually ongoing basis, and these may differ in some instances from that provided by the ACMP and NaTHNaC. HPS guidelines and maps can be accessed on the country pages of TRAVAX and fitfortravel. NaTHNaC follows the ACMP country recommendations and the NaTHNaC Country Information Pages are being updated accordingly. The ACMP guidelines will be reviewed and updated annually, and as/when necessary.

Healthcare professionals are assured that if they follow either standard, their travellers will be receiving expert advice based on evidence-based recommendations.

The ACMP guidelines can be accessed via the website of Public Health England at:
