05 August 2013

The Council of Agriculture has reported a further three cases of rabies virus infection in Formosan ferret-badgers. This brings the total number of animal infections to 22; 21 Formosan ferret-badgers and one Asian house shrew that was caught in a home in Taitung county last week.

The 21 Formosan ferret-badgers come from six cities and counties in central and southern Taiwan.

Nantou County was the site of 10 confirmed infections, while five originated in Taitung County, three in Kaohsiung City, and one each in the cities of Taichung and Tainan and in Yunlin County.

The Council of Agriculture has arranged further supplies of rabies vaccine to the affected areas for the animal control campaign.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers should be aware that Taiwan is no longer considered a 'no risk' country for rabies but now a 'low risk'. Animal contact should be avoided and any bites sustained, should be reported for medical assessment. Pre-exposure rabies vaccine should be considered for particular risk groups based on an individual risk assessment.
