It is important to consider the possibility of MERS-CoV in a traveller returning from Hajj with serious illness, particularly those with respiratory symptoms. It is also important to avoid over-diagnosing MERS-CoV as respiratory symptoms are very common at Hajj.

The document: Illness in Travellers Returning from Hajj 2013 provides advice for healthcare professionals, principally in primary care, on the assessment of pilgrims returning from Hajj, with the aim of raising awareness of possible serious illness, particularly with reference to Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS CoV, formerly known as Novel Coronavirus).
