Poliomyelitis in Kenya (Update)

03 June 2013

A total of 5 poliomyelitis cases have now been reported in the Dadaab refugee complex in north-eastern Kenya. Since the first case was identified on 17 May 2013, a further 4 individuals have been laboratory confirmed as positive for wild poliovirus infection.

WHO has sent an emergency team to Dadaab to implement a vaccination campaign in the five Dadaab camps in collaboration with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) as well as teams from the Kenyan Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and other agencies.

Concurrently, the Kenyan Ministry of Health is conducting a vaccination campaign among the host community population in North Eastern Province in close collaboration with WHO.
