A spike in the number of measles cases in South Australia has been reported. In the past month, 10 cases of measles have been associated with travellers returning from Bali in Indonesia.
Five individuals from Victoria have been diagnosed with measles after returning from Bali over the past 5 weeks, prompting warnings for people to be vaccinated before travelling to Indonesia. Since then, a further 5 individuals in Victoria have become infected.
Advice for Travellers
It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
