Green Book Update - Chapter 20: Japanese Encephalitis

The Green Book, Chapter 20: Japanese Encephalitis has recently been updated and the Japanese Encephalitis record on TRAVAX has been amended accordingly.

Two important updates included in the chapter will be particularly helpful to practioners:

  • Accelerated schedule - the Joint Committee on Vaccine and Immunisation (JVCI) Travel sub-committee has reviewed the data and considers that in special circumstances (based on risk assessment) where time constraints do not allow the 2nd dose of IXIARO® to be given on day 28, it may be given 'off license' up to four days earlier, i.e. from day 24. The data available does not support giving the 2nd dose of IXIARO® any earlier than day 24.
  • Reinforcing immunisation - the JCVI Travel sub-committee has reviewed the data and considers that IXIARO® JE vaccine may be used as a booster for those who have previously received a course of Green Cross JE vaccine. It should be noted that it is not known if the two vaccines are interchangeable during a primary course.
