The World Health Organisation have confirmed a case of wild polio virus type 1 in the capital Baghdad, the 1st reported case in the country for 14 years (since 2000). The affected individual is a 6 month old, unimmunised boy who developed paralysis on 10th February 2014. Gene sequencing indicates the virus is closely related to that already reported from the Syrian Arab Republic at the end of 2013.
The Middle Eastern emergency response to the resurgence of polio in the region has included several national immunisation campaigns. So far, the Dhi Qar Department of Health in Iraq has vaccinated 316 000 children in the 1st round of immunisation, which ended in early March (2014) and the 2nd round is scheduled to begin in April (2014).
It is recommended that travellers have a poliomyelitis booster (or course) if not already protected and take precautions with food, water and personal hygiene.
