Skin Cancer on the Rise

29 April 2014

Cancer Research UK reported that since the mid-1970s in United Kingdom, the incidence of malignant melanoma has increased more rapidly than any of the current ten most common cancers. Cancer Research UK acknowledges that some of the increase may be due to improved surveillance and detection, however, it is mostly attributed to changing sun-related behaviour such as increased frequency of holidays abroad and sun bed use.

The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) runs a national Sun Awareness campaign which includes a Sun Awareness Week 5th - 11th May 2014 and FREE Sun Awareness Packs that include educational leaflets and posters for educating people about the dangers of sunburn and excessive tanning.

For further information on the risk and risk management of sun exposure in travellers please refer to TRAVAX Sun Exposure advice sheet.
