Cholera is an ongoing problem in Nigeria and the Centre for Disease Control has reported that cholera has been affecting 14 states since the beginning of 2014. Around 9006 cases, including 106 deaths have been recorded during the first three months of the year. Of those, 81 have been laboratory confirmed as cholera.
The worst affected state is Bauchi with 6910 cases and 48 deaths, followed by Kano with 1270 cases and 16 deaths. Other states reporting cholera include: Kaduna, Lagos, Plateau and Sokoto. Cases have also been reported in the Federal Capital Territory.
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
