Cholera in South Sudan (Update)

21 May 2014

The outbreak of cholera in the state of Juba which began last week is worsening and has now spread. The number of cases in Juba has increased to more than 130, with children most affected. Cholera cases have now been reported from the states of Jonglei and Upper Nile.

In response to the outbreak, UNICEF has set up a cholera treatment centre at the Juba Teaching Hospital and is providing supplies of medicine and other essentials.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
