Dengue Fever in Tanzania (Update)

The dengue fever outbreak that began in Dar es Salaam has spread to other parts of the country. As of 30 May 2014, 7 regions on the mainland and 2 regions on the island of Zanzibar are affected. A total of 2121 suspected cases of dengue fever have been recorded on the mainland; of those, 1017 have been confirmed. Eight suspected cases have been reported on Zanzibar, one of which has been confirmed as dengue virus infection. The majority of cases on the mainland are located in three districts of Dar es Salaam: Kinondoni, Temeke and Ilala.

WHO and other partners are supporting the Ministry of Health Response Task force implement the following: enhancement of surveillance; training of healthcare workers and laboratory staff on the management of Dengue cases and diagnostic, confirmation and monitoring of Dengue fever and integrated vector management.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
