The director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has reported 1,100 new cases of pertussis (whooping cough) in the past two weeks. This brings the total number of pertussis cases in 2014 to 4,558 (as of June 24) compared with 2532 cases in 2013: children four months-old or younger have accounted for nearly two thirds of all pertussis hospitalisations.
It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of pertussis vaccine in accordance with the UK schedule. The JCVI recommends pertussis boosters for pregnant women, but not for other adults in the UK.
