The 2014 transmission season of West Nile fever (WNF) has started in Europe. In 2012, the principle countries reporting indigenous transmission were Greece, Italy, Romania and Hungary.
Since 2011, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has published weekly updates of the spatial distribution of WNF cases during the transmission season (June to November).
For the current transmission season, collection of information about WNF cases started two weeks ago. It includes information provided through real-time reporting by Member States and systematic screening of WNF cases reported in Europe and the Mediterranean basin performed by ECDC.
This season, 6 European cases have been reported, all from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
