As of 30 July 2014, 5459 cases of cholera have been reported in the ongoing outbreak in South Sudan. New infections are declining in the capital city Juba, where the outbreak began, however, cholera is spreading in other states. The majority of new infections are being reported in Torit, Eastern Equatoria. 150 km east of Juba, close to the border with Uganda.
The South Sudan Red Cross has dispatched vounteers to Torit to raise awareness, educate on prevention methods and distribute rehydration salts, purification tablets and soap.
Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
