Sanofi Pasteur MSD Ltd has confirmed that the shortage of Stamaril® yellow fever vaccine in single dose units is ongoing. It is hoped that supply may be available by mid-end September 2014.
In the interim, Sanofi Pasteur MSD Ltd has imported Stamaril® yellow fever vaccine from Belgium. This product is identical to the Stamaril® supplied to the UK and is available in a pack of ten single dose units. The imported Stamaril® is unlicensed in the UK; approval for its use has been granted from the Medicines Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) under special license.
A covering letter and Patient Information Leaflets printed in English are enclosed with the vaccine package.
Practitioners should note that, where there is an equivalent licensed medical product available, this should be used.
Yellow fever vaccine that has been imported under special license should be administered by non-prescribers under a Patient Specific Direction.
Nurse prescribers should refer to guidance from the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
