Measles in Solomon Islands

08 September 2014

The measles outbreak in Solomon Islands is spreading and at least 500 cases have been reported. It is thought that many other cases have yet to be reported. The outbreak which began in July, and affected mainly Honiara, has now spread to other areas, including: Malaita, Guadalcanal, Isabel, Western province, Temotu and Renbel.

A mass immunisation campaign is being launched that will target all those between the age of 6 months and 30 years.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
