A suspected human case of West Nile fever has been reported by the state Secretariat of Health (SESAPI). If confirmed, this will be the first human case in Brazil. The case, who is a farmer by occupation, was hospitalised for treatment in the Nathan Portela Infectious Diseases Hospital in Teresina and has since been released. Initial laboratory testing identified West Nile virus; further laboratory testing has been carried out to confirm the aetiology of the virus.
There is no vaccine or specific treatment for WNV. Infection is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito, therefore avoidance of mosquito bites is essential, by covering up and the use of bite avoidance measures.
