The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has reported that since mid-June 2013, 13 suspected cases of yellow fever have now been laboratory-confirmed. The 13 cases have been recorded in 6 health areas of the territory of Kasongo-Lunda in Bandundu province in the west of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Awareness campaigns are being conducted in the area and an epidemiological investigation into the outbreak is in progress.
An immunisation capaign has recently been implemented in Kasai-Oriental province in central DRC where an outbreak of yellow fever is ongoing.
Advice for Travellers
There is a risk of yellow fever in most areas of DRC, except Katanga Province, and vaccination is advised for travellers (unless contraindicated). There is also a certificate requirement for all travellers over 1 year of age.
Travellers should also take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
