Measles in Liberia

14 April 2015

The media have report on an outbreak of measles in Margibi county in the north to central coast of Liberia.

The outbreak was first identified two weeks ago and 77 cases, including 6 deaths have been recorded. Cases have occurred in four health districts of the county: Gibi, Mahnban Kaba, Marshall and Kakata.

A nationwide immunisation campaign is scheduled for 18-14 May 2015, however, in light of the outbreak in Margibi, the county health team made the decision to begin immunising against measles in the outbreak area on 13 April 2015.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
