Cholera in Nigeria

An outbreak of cholera is ongoing in Ebonyi state, in the southeast of the country. The outbreak began in February 2015, and the source was traced to Amachi community in Abakaliki Local Government Area (LGA). The outbreak has now spread to 7 of the 13 LGAs of the state and 256 cases and 20 deaths have been recorded thus far.

A team of medical experts has been mobilised from Abuja to assist in the control of the outbreak.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/ water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
