Cholera in South Sudan

25 June 2015

A confirmed outbreak of cholera has been reported by the Ministry of Health in South Sudan. The first case was confirmed on 1 June 2015, and as of 23 June 2015, 171 confirmed cases and 18 deaths have been reported.

The outbreak began in United Nations bases in the capital Juba, where large numbers of people have sought sanctuary during the ongoing civil war in the country. The outbreak has now spread to other areas of the city.

The World Health Organisation and aid organisations are implementing a cholera vaccination campaign targeting 100 000 individuls, in order to contain the outbreak.

In 2014, a cholera outbreak in South Sudan resulted in more than 6400 cases including 167 deaths.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
