Cholera in Tanzania

An outbreak of cholera in Tanzania has been reported by the media. The Ministry of Health with support from WHO is working to locate the source of infection and contain the outbreak. The outbreak began two weeks ago and is occurring in Dar es Salaam and Morogoro region. A total of 404 suspected cases reported; the majority of which (354) have been identified in Dar es Salaam.

Who has set up five cholera treatment centres in the affected areas including: laboratory reagents for diagnosis, medical supplies, chemicals for water prurification and disinfectants.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
