Poliomyelitis in Nigeria (Update)

29 September 2015

On 25 September 2015, WHO announced that polio is no longer endemic in Nigeria. This is the first time that transmission of wild poliovirus has been interrupted in Nigeria.

A case of wild poliovirus has not reported in Nigeria since 24 July 2014, and laboratory data have confirmed a full 12 months have passed without any new cases. Nigeria and the African region are moving towards to being certified polio-free.

Advice for Travellers

The polio recommendations for Nigeria are unchanged as it will be another two years with no further cases of polio before the country is declared polio free.

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of polio vaccine according to the UK childhood schedule. It is recommended that travellers have a poliomyelitis booster (or course) if not already protected. Travellers should also take precautions with food, water and personal hygiene.
