Cholera in Iraq (Update)

The Ministry of Health for Iraq has reported to the media that 41 new cholera cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours. The new cases were identified in: al-Rusafa district of east Baghdad (12), Karkh, west Baghdad (7), Muthanna province (11), Diwaniyah city, central province (8) and the city of Najaf, south of Baghdad (3). This brings the total number of cholera cases to 1302.

The Ministry of Health cholera task force is organising the distribution of bottled water, water kits, hygiene kits, bleaching powder and chlorine tablets and the establishment of water distribution points; sanitation activities, such as disinfecting septic tanks at health facilities, conducting targeted sanitation improvements including for the water treatment plant, as well as regular cleaning of latrines and bathing facilities and proper solid waste collection, disposal and management, in cholera affected areas, with particular attention to camps hosting the internally displaced people and refugees.

Discussions are taking place regarding the possibility of a cholera vaccine campaign for priority groups.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
