Cholera in Tanzania (Update)

27 October 2015

The cholera outbreak in Tanzania is ongoing and as of 21 October 2015, 4922 cases and 74 deaths have been recorded. The majority of cases (3500) have been reported from the city of Dar es Salaam. The outbreak has now spread to the island of Zanzibar where 140 cases have been reported in a short period of time.

There are concerns that the outbreak will spread further with the onset of the rainy season in the near future.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
