Cholera in Iraq (Update)

28 October 2015

The cholera outbreak first announced by the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Iraq on 15 September 2015, is not yet under control and the number of cases now stands at 2055.

WHO and the MOH are initiating a cholera vaccination campaign for those most vulnerable to infection. WHO has mobilised 510 000 doses of oral cholera vaccine to provide a two dose schedule for around 249 319 high risk individuals throughout the country.

Those considered most at risk are living in the 62 displacement camps and collective centres for Syrian refugees and internally displaced Iraqis.

The first round of vaccine is scheduled to begin on 31 October 2015, with a second dose of vaccine to follow according to schedule. Additional staff from WHO and health partners have been deployed to Iraq to lend support.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food/water precautions and personal hygiene should be maintained whenever possible.
